A série de TV “A Ilha da Fantasia” foi levada ao ar em solo americano entre 14 de Janeiro de 1977 e 19 de maio de 1984. Criada por Gene Levitt, foi produzida por Aaron Spelling e Leonard Goldberg.

Antes de se tornar uma série regular com episódios de uma hora, “A Ilha da Fantasia” foi tema de dois filmes pilotos feitos para televisão, cada um com duas horas de duração.

O programa era estrelado pelo ator Ricardo Montalban, que vivia um personagem elegante e bastante culto chamado Sr. Roarke. Habitando uma ilha misteriosa localizada em alguma parte do Oceano Pacífico, Roarke recebia pessoas dispostas a realizar uma fantasia por um preço estabelecido. Ao lado do personagem principal, o anão Tatoo, vivido pelo ator Hervé Villechaize.

Cada episódio iniciava com a chegada de um avião, transportando tais pessoas e Tatoo subindo em uma torre para tocar um sino aos gritos de “O avião! O avião!”. Enquanto cada visitante saía do avião, Roarke descrevia para seu assistente de forma enigmática a natureza de sua fantasia. O passo seguinte era se apresentar aos mesmos: “Meus queridos convidados, sou o Sr. Roarke, seu anfitrião. Bem vindos a Ilha da Fantasia”.

Roarke normalmente dava ensinamentos de vida aos seus convidados. Em alguns casos, intervinha pessoalmente quando a fantasia se tornava perigosa demais para os hóspedes. Cada episódio alternava duas tramas independentes enquanto os convidados interagiam com Roarke. A natureza de cada fantasia variava muito de um enredo para outro. A exceção foi feita em um episódio onde um convidado (o ator Don Knotts) não tinha fantasia alguma. Foi até a ilha simplesmente para relaxar e se divertir.

Na sexta temporada a atriz Wendy Shaal se juntou ao elenco como uma bela assistente loira de olhos castanhos chamada Julie. Para a realização da sétima e última temporada os produtores optaram por demitir Hervé Villechaize, colocando em seu lugar o ator Christopher Hewett para interpretar um calmo mordomo chamado Lawrence (que também foi o responsável pelo toque do sino, mas em vez de subir na torre, ele simplesmente apertava um botão do lado de fora fazendo o sino tocar automaticamente).

Em princípio o ator pensado para viver o Sr. Roarke foi Orson Welles. Spelling rejeitou a escolha por conta do temperamento irritadiço de Welles. Outra idéia rejeitada foi Roarke e Tatoo possuírem uma assistente do sexo feminino. Várias celebridades atuaram como convidados de episódios: Peter Graves, Cyd Charrise, Roddy McDowell, Sammy Davis Jr., Sonny Bono, Julie Newmar, Adam West, Christopher George e Dick York.

A série foi gravada em Burbank, Califórnia. As cenas de abertura com o avião sobrevoando o litoral foram realizadas em Kauai, Havaí. A casa com a torre do sino, onde Tatoo toca o sino é o Queen Anne Cottage, localizado em Los Angeles.

Em 1998 a ABC reviveu a série escalando o ator Malcom McDowell para interpretar o Sr. Roarke. Esta nova série foi filmada no Havaí mas durou apenas meia temporada.

A TV Globo exibiu o primeiro piloto no sábado de 28 de Janeiro de 1978, as 21h15. Consta que a emissora exibiu o segundo piloto ainda naquele ano. A série propriamente dita só entrou no ar na segunda-feira de 01 de janeiro de 1979, as 20h55, após a telenovela “Dancin Days”.

Em diferentes dias e horários, “A Ilha da Fantasia” permaneceu na Globo até o ano de 1986. Em 1987 migrou para a TV Manchete onde permaneceu até 1991. Em 2004 foi relançada pela Rede 21 e pelo Canal TCM da TV a Cabo. Consta ter sido exibida também na Rede Brasil e na Ulbra TV.
